In 1939 Roy O’Brien opened the doors of O’Brien’s Music at 278 Water Street in downtown St. John’s. Newfoundland was still its own country, Roy and his wife Nellie waved their national pride high, becoming one of the first retailers of Newfoundland and Irish music. The store quickly became the biggest seller of accordions in Canada when Newfoundland joined confederation. Roy and Nellie raised six children in their home upstairs from the store, which had become a magnet for music-lovers.

Nantel Music is a family business founded in 1971 in St-Jerome dedicated to selling instruments and teaching music.  A couple of years later, the little enterprise expanded by opening a second store and musical education center at Place Rosemere (shopping center). A third location was opened in March 1984 at Centre 2000 in Laval, where the business became a lot more important. With customers focusing more on Laval, they decided to close their doors in Rosemere.

Cosmo Guitars, a small business started by Tom Hebert, began in 1966 importing guitars from Italy and Japan. Tom was fresh out of the Air Force and itching to pursue a business venture in the area he was most interested in…music. Tom had been involved in bands while in the Air Force and his passion was the guitar.

Although importing guitars was promising, in 1968 Tom realized the added potential of his Sheppard Ave location in Downsview and opened the first Cosmo Music. Selling mostly the guitars and accessories he was importing the store grew.
